Nairobi Province Visual Arts Exhibition 2010
Message from the Chair - Person
On behalf of the Nairobi Province Visual
Arts Exhibition Committee, I wish to convey
the gratitude and sense of collective
achievement the Committee feels, from
the tremendous response by individual
artists, arts centres and arts training
institutions, to the call for participation
in the Nairobi Province Visual Arts Exhibition
2010. This year, over 200 artworks were
submitted for selection into the Exhibition.
The works on exhibition exemplify the
diversity of artists based in Nairobi
- from the formal student of art to the
self-taught artist; from the emerging
talent to the established practitioner;
from representational art to abstract
art.
The success of this Exhibition lies with
a number of participants whom the Committee
wishes to heartily thank. Volunteering
to reach out to their networks of artists
were Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts (BIFA),
the National Museums of Kenya, Kuona Trust,
the GoDown, RAMOMA, African Colours, Pan
African Visual Arts Association (PAVA
Kenya) and Kenyatta University Fine Arts
Department. All these rallied together
with the Committee, and ensured that the
Exhibition took place. The annual Nairobi
Province Visual Arts Exhibition truly
has the potential to become an important
date in the province's annual calendar
of events, as it is a platform to showcase
and promote visual arts in Nairobi province,
and in so doing, to make art visible and
accessible to the general public. Indeed
the exhibition branded "Manjano" which
means yellow in Kiswahili is a reference
to Nairobi, the City in the sun. The Committee
hopes that as you view and enjoy the art
displayed, you will catch a glimpse of
the very promising future prospects of
the Nairobi Province Visual Arts Exhibition.
