The
4th East African Arts Summit
Took
place from 22 to 26 April 2009 at the
Severin Sea Lodge, Mombasa, Kenya. The
conference is an initiative of the GoDown
Arts Centre.
The conference brought together over
50 key players from the East Africa arts
and culture sector, including artists,
policy makers, and representatives from
business and media. The aim of the conference
was to reflect on current developments
in the Arts and Culture sector and to
address areas that need critical attention
in order to improve the vibrancy and sustainability
of cultural initiatives, and to improve
regional cultural cooperation and exchange.
The conference focused on three main
issues:
 |
the creative/cultural
economy; |
 |
media and the arts; |
 |
alternative approaches
to sustainability. |
These areas will were thoroughly discussed
on the basis of the experiences and practices
within the domains of the performing and
visual arts. The conference gave impulse
to new initiatives for strengthening the
East African cultural sector and stimulating
cooperation between players in the East
African cultural region through inspiring
presentations, critical debates and the
sharing of knowledge from very diverse
participants.
During this meeting, participants agreed
that a practical Artists Handbook, covering
legal, administrative, communication &
marketing, and fundraising issues is needed
for the region. The GoDown is facilitating
the creation and publication of the Hanbook.
