Manjano – Nairobi County Visual Arts Exhibition and competition is here! competition has now entered its second phase. Over a hundred pieces have been entered by both established artists and students. Selection and judging is scheduled to take place next week, and the lucky winners – and the recipient of the grand prize of Ksh.300,000 being announced during the official opening of the exhibition on the 16th February, 6pm at The Village Market.

With the aim of tracking and highlighting how culture and arts continue to contribute to the formation of the life in a city, The GoDown facilitated discussions about “Nairobi” on Monday 30th January 2012. The first of a series of these discussions – in reflection to Nairobi‘s spatial, social and historical development – was held at The Fairview hotel with twenty-five participants from varied and diverse backgrounds and connections to this city.

The Kenya Burning exhibition is running at the GoDown gallery. The show is open to the public in the hope that it will encourage Kenyans to participate in the oncoming general elections with a sober outlook.

Medeva

Final preparation and rehearsals for Medeva`s upcoming TV programme -Agenda Kenya-are in high gear. The team will start shooting the episodes next week. Watch out for the show which will be on your screens soon!

In addition to this, recording for the pilot of the fast paced Swahili radio drama ‘Hafla’ begins next week.

NairoBits Trust

Training in all the NairoBits centres is ongoing as usual with the team hoping to provide better services to the students after being joined by 3 new trainers. To further this agenda, a new course 2&3 class has been opened at the Majimazuri centre.

MamaBits is currently engaged in sourcing for ICT internships for students who graduated in December. Out of 48 students who graduated, 8 already have internships in various companies.

Ketebul Music

Ketebul signed artist Ogoya Nengo will be performing at the “Sauti za Busara” festival in Zanzibar. She arrived in Nairobi with her 6 piece band for rehearsals at the Ketebul studios. She will be taking to the stage on the 10th of February 2012 accompanied by her long time collaborators Margaret Asin, Wilfrida Owit and Olith Ratego.

Kuruka Maisha

The Kuruka Maisha stage production is finally here! “Tunaruka Tukilala” follows the lives of young men and women who end up living on the streets of the slums, have to survive there, and eventually find a way out. It seeks to tell the story of the `Kuruka Maisha’ firsthand. Ethical Fashion Africa Limited (EFAL)

EFAL is preparing to receive a team from the Fair Labour Association from 6th to 9th February 2012. The team will audit and assess EFAL on internal management systems, fair labour issues, policies and procedures besides training the whole EFAL staff on internationally accepted labour relationships.

Phoenix Players

This week, “Respect” continues on the Phoenix stage. In the play, four teenagers take a day trip to Cologne. By the end of the night, their world has been turned upside down. One is dead, two are in police custody, and the fourth is recovering from stab wounds!
