Red Soil and Roasted Maize: selected essays and articles on contemporary Kenya by RASNA WARAH: Reviewed by Stephen Partington

Warah speaks truth to power, demonstrating that she has little time for that nonsensical type of sycophancy which holds that we must all respect our leaders regardless of their words and actions. Time after time, Warah’s articles asks the reader to thumb his/her nose at irresponsible power, to question the motives of those who’d set Kenyan against Kenyan, and to act responsibly for the good of others.

Phoenix

Opening this Friday the 4th is RIGHT YOU ARE (IF YOU THINK YOU ARE). This is a situational comedy by Luigi Pirandello and directed by Millicent Ogutu. It revolves around a government official who is deployed to a small town- where everyone knows everything about everybody! He has, in tow, a wife and his mother-in-law. Peculiarly, he houses both women separately, and nobody gets to see his wife- who is permanently ensconced in a fifth-floor apartment. The tongues begin to wag- and Pirandello plays on the fickleness of the human being when faced with a situation they do not understand!

Tickets are Ksh. 650 for Adults and Ksh.400 for Students. Saturday May 5th tickets are however sold out.
