AwaaZ

The term “art cinema” is one of the most familiar in film studies. This type of cinema has formal innovation, is aligned with the latest trends in literature and the fine arts, and it targets an audience outside of the typical young adult demographic.

It is interesting to learn how Indian Cinema has embraced art film – also known as new wave, parallel or progressive film – for a long period. However, there is a re-emergence of new parallel cinema which strives to present the socio-cultural realities of India. To learn more about how upcoming producers, Anusha Rizvi and Kiran Rao, have given life to art cinema in India, get yourself a copy of the Awaaz magazine Volume 8, Issue 3. 2011.

Phoenix Players

Still running at Phoenix Theatres is “Taming of The Shrew” by William Shakespeare and directed by George Mungai. In this play, Katherine, or Kate, is the daughter of Baptista Minola, with whom she lives in Padua. She is sharp-tongued, quick-tempered, and prone to violence, particularly against anyone who tries to marry her. Her hostility toward suitors particularly distresses her father. But her anger and rudeness disguise her deep-seated sense of insecurity and her jealousy toward her sister, Bianca. She does not resist her suitor Petruchio forever, though, and she eventually subjugates herself to him, despite her previous repudiation of marriage.

Dates: 10th-25th Feb 2012. Thursdays are student nights, students with valid identification. Tickets are Ksh. 650 for Adults, Ksh.400 for Students.
